Breaking Boundaries in Design

Well, this can be taken quite literally by the title of this post.

Have you ever considered as a designer of how to add that little bit of extra difference to your design?

We came across this image in the office today and thought it worth sharing a piece on what we considered a fine piece of work.

Although the image you can clearly see the context of the image and the holder of the proposed image should this ever be a poster design, this image is truly brought to life by the additional line drawing sketch exceeding the boundaries of the image.

We particularly like the fact the majority of the colour within this design end at the natural edge of the Six Sheet.

The next time you are doing a design...

Vector Dog

Whilst using StumbleUpon this morning we at TheDesignOven office where thrown a big blank green screen surrounded by a black border. This is usually the kind of thing that suffers by poor ratings on said inspiration site because of the instant nature that is required to generally succeed.

However, feeling in an inquistive mood, we investigated this unusual blank screen. Slowly moving the mouse down to click on the green as if expecting it to spring to life. It didn't. Usually by now, this would have been a thumbs down. But there was something about this green screen that continued to captivate. Perhaps because our mouse pointer had vanished?!

Then, all of a sudden, the moment ar...

Cool Peace Sign

Really nice illustration of a hand created from paint strokes.

This graphic has a real depth to it because of the bright colours used in the texture of the hand and paint. It is a very abstract style and the subtle texture to the background really helps the image stand off the page. We hope you will share it out.

Retro Poster from 2007

From (now way back in) 2007, this poster has been executed very well.

Although you might associate the use of circle vectors and paint daubs and splats with relatively amatuer designs in recent years, we think the use of depth has been incorporated very well into this particular poster.

The viewer is dragged into the center of the circle (we are wondering if it is deliberately reminiscent of an eye-ball) with the subtle use of the drop shadows with a top left light source. The shadows on the orange and red circles are the most dominant and provide real steps into the picture which drag you in.

Perhaps if this design was being made with modern trends the designer would reduce the prominence of the paint...

Cheap Flooring

Are you aware of Pinterest?

Pinterest is a virtual pinboard to allow you to create great inspiration moodboards and share things that you like or are inspired by grouped by theme.

For the Home (an interest pinboard for ideas about home decoration) threw out a very random idea that we here at TDO thought was worth sharing...

Looking for an unusual flooring idea on a low budget? How about something for less that £1.50 per square metre. Literally using 144 pennies to fill the floor!

Very time consuming, and maybe a little cold on the feet on a morning... but in the right room...

Building Typography

These are the works of Omar Aqil.

The concept of these works is very simple, creating large buildings from big bold type letters. However, the delivery of these is superb.

The low level and subdued red lighting with purple / blue shadows helps to create a really blended image. Part of their appeal is definately the gradiented and low saturated colour scheme. It is remensicent of the flyer design that TheDesignOven created for a retail outlet SALE.

The designer, hailing from Pakistan, has obviously put alot of thought and consideration into the...

Florian Nicolle Artwork

We have seen alot of the work of Florian Nicolle in the past.

We are huge fans of the French illustrators work. The layering of ink, colour, paper and paint, as well as some subtle additions using photoshop all combine to create stunning illustrations of the subjects.

The style of the works are absolutely beautiful, especially those where the lines are unfinished and incomplete. They really leave the viewer to finsih the work on their own and this use of engaging the audiences imagintaion is invaluable in making artwork of this type successful.

We hope you agree that these are well worth sharing, so make sure that you click the social media buttons below.

We were unsure about whether to put this video in our "Must See" category, or "Inspiration" category. We lumped for "Inspiration", because that is exactly what it is. Inspirational.

This is a real example of a good school organising something that, frankly, deserves to go viral.

Of course this video is cheesy. It personifies the meaning of the word! But by God is it enjoyable! Try to watch this video without smiling. It's just impossible. We have watched it a couple of times in the office this morning and it has brought cheer to our day!

We just had to share it. That is, after all, how we found it. A friend of ours used to be a pupi...

Tang Yau Hoong Illustration

In todays blog post we bring you a fantastic example of the use of negative space.

Tang Yau Hoong's series of illustrations (the full collection can be seen at his website) are very cleverly composed. Simple in there appearance, but massively complex in their composition, his works really captivate their audience. When viewing the collection we found ourselves thinking... "That's brilliant, what's next!"

For every image we viewed, we were left wanting to see what else could be achieved with his illustrative style.

Our favourites are shown above here, in particular the pen nib. As quite often is the case with good graphic design, it is ...

Amazing Poster Design

Giampaolo Miraglia. Ever heard of him? No?

If you haven't, check out his portfolio!

Simply put... WOW.

We absolutely adore the geometric style he uses for his graphic designs. A beautiful blend of 2D and 3D works with some really interesting typography incorporated in there.

Check out his portfolio and let us know which are your favourites. Our favourites are shown above.

Particularly like the monochrome first poster. The floating 3D shaded object contrasting with the uber clean circles (even where the circle is exploding) is very, very nice indeed. The whole composition almost ...

Koi Coffee Spill Design

Following on from Mondays blog post about the design revolved around the coffee spill dress, we thought we would also share this sketch with you.

The coffee spill in this sketchbook has leant itself nicely to colour the background of the koi of the sketch.

With an old tattoo style to the sketch and the repeated nature of the koi intertwining into each other, it is almost as if the fish are swimming along the coffee spill.

A very nice sketch with a Japanese feel. Very nice work.
